On September 11, 2022, the Swedish Parliament will hold a general election. It is expected to result in another hung parliament, which means that no party has a majority of seats and the ruling party must seek the support of other parties to pass bills.

The World Dog Alliance (WDA) has studied the Swedish political landscape and believes that gaining support from all political parties will ensure that the next Swedish government joins the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats. The WDA has contacted Members of Parliament (MPs) from various political parties, including the ruling Social Democratic Party, the Moderate Party, and the Green Party. If these MPs are re-elected, there will be a strong push for Sweden to join the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats.

On October 28, 2021, four Swedish MPs and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) wrote a letter to Prime Minister Stefan Löwen, urging the government to initiate the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats. In the letter, they stated that “dog and cat meat is outdated and inhumane, and poses an urgent food safety problem. Sweden should send a message to the world: stop eating dog and cat meat now!”

Along with Sweden, the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats is supported by nearly 200 lawmakers in the US, the UK, Japan, and Norway. On February 7, 2020, thirty bipartisan US Congressmen sent a letter to then-President Donald Trump, asking him to initiate the International Agreement. On March 2, 2020, November 24, 2020, and October 28, 2021, sixty-seven UK MPs, thirty-four Japanese MPs, and four Norwegian MPs sent letters to their respective heads of government expressing their support for the International Agreement. This year, lawmakers in the US and Japan have once again sent letters to their respective heads of government. Their persistence in promoting the International Agreement shows that the WDA’s philosophy is gaining worldwide recognition.
