The Animal Rights Committee of Legislative Council had its first meeting on 13 January. The Committee aims to enhance animal welfare in Hong Kong, and crack down on animal cruelty.

WDA’s Champion, Legislator Gary Chan suggested “Dogs and Cats Graveyard Scheme” as the final resting place for street dogs and cats.

Gary Chan noted that the Government only provided support on softwares but nothing on hardwares. Instead of relying on NGOs, he believed that the Government could bear more responsibilities in this field.

Gary Chan was finally elected as the Chairperson of the Committee. The motion to include “Dogs and Cats Graveyard Scheme” into the agenda was passed.
