With the new Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, taking office, the World Dog Lovers Alliance (WDA) has opened a new chapter in its campaign to ban the eating of cats and dogs.
The WDA has been promoting the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats in Sweden since 2021, but despite the full support of several cross-party members of parliament, the government has not acted due to political uncertainty. The new government will be a coalition of the Moderate Party, the Liberal Party and the Christian Democrats, with the right-wing Sweden Democrats agreeing to provide support for the government.
The new Prime Minister is a dog lover, and the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats is the responsibility of the Minister of Climate and Environment and the Minister of Rural Affairs, so the appointment of the heads of these two ministries is important.
The Minister of Climate and Environment is Romina Pulmohtari, who belongs to the Liberal Party. Pourmohtari’s father is an Iranian refugee, which is why Pourmohtari is in politics. At the age of 26, she became the youngest cabinet official in Sweden’s history.
The Minister of Rural Affairs is Peter Kruengel. He is 41 years old and comes from the Christian Democratic Party.
The two ministers have no contact with the WDA and no experience in animal protection. The WDA will actively contact the two ministers to explain the importance of banning dogs and cats and to lobby them to take action to promote Sweden’s accession to the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats.
